Now: Red Dots Allowed for the LTC Shooting Qual

Effective immediately, Applicants for the Texas LTC may use Red Dot- and/or laser-equipped handguns for the LTC Shooting Proficiency Demonstration at SVAGunTraining.com.
Explanation
This has been a confusing issue for LTC Instructors and, depending on where and from whom you took your test, you could have been told different things. The reason is the statute language is ambiguous and there's not been clear direction from the Texas Department of Public Safety. If you surf the internet looking for information on the issue you will find a lot of conflicting opinions — on what is/is not allowed, when it did/did not become allowable, who said what, when, where, etc. What you won't find is a definitive statement from the DPS clarifying the matter, and you won't get any help from the relevant Texas Administrative Code subchapter 6.14 published at the Secretary of State website.
At least until now. Texas DPS has issued a clarification with their updated package for Instructor License Renewal which states that only optical devices which magnify or "zoom" the shooter's field of view are prohibited. This should benefit those with some visual impairment and those who struggle with the 15-yard portion of the test.
